The studies condcuted by Dr. Perillo contribute to the understanding and management of various medical conditions, particularly in hepatology, autoimmune diseases, and gastroenterology. A case report on a Filipino patient with systemic lupus erythematosus-scleroderma overlap syndrome highlights the diagnostic challenges and complexities of managing overlapping autoimmune diseases. In hepatology, three studies focus on ultrasound-guided percutaneous radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for hepatocellular carcinoma. One study examines the frequency and risk factors for complications in 363 RFA sessions, aiding in improving procedural safety. Another identifies predictors of technique effectiveness, providing insights into optimizing treatment strategies. A third study investigates survival predictors, offering valuable prognostic data to enhance patient outcomes. Additionally, research on the Harmless Acute Pancreatitis Scoring System (HAPS) evaluates its diagnostic accuracy in a Filipino population, demonstrating its utility as a rapid tool for predicting non-severe acute pancreatitis. These studies collectively advance clinical decision-making by improving diagnostic accuracy, procedural safety, and treatment outcomes across different medical disciplines. Their findings contribute to refining risk stratification models, guiding patient selection for interventions, and enhancing overall healthcare management strategies. By addressing both rare and prevalent conditions, these research efforts support evidence-based approaches to patient care, particularly within the Filipino healthcare setting.
