The UST College of Education, in partnership with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts-Philippine Cultural Education Program (NCCA-PCEP), spearheaded the Kongreso ng Gurong Mag-aaral (K-Guma) para sa Edukasyong Kultural, held on August 30 at the Education Auditorium.




Aiming to build the capacity of pre-service teachers (PSTs) in culture-based education in the context of 21st century learning, the event was able to gather around 400 PSTs from its Luzon Cluster.
Participants were trained in creating, developing, and implementing localized, contextualized, and indigenized lessons, learning modules, instructional materials, and other learning resources that ground learners in their culture as Filipinos.
The congress opened with the welcome message of UST College of Education Dean Assoc. Prof. Pilar I. Romero, LPT, Ph.D. followed by the opening remarks of NCCA Executive Director Dr. Eric B. Zerrudo and the Congress overview of PCEP Director Dr. Joseph J. Cristobal.
Plenary lectures on various related topics, presented by prominent educators, include 鈥淐ulture-based Education鈥 by Master Teacher Jonah T. Jimenez of Don Vicente Rama Memorial National High School, Cebu; 鈥淢atatag Curriculum鈥 by Master Teacher Salvador M. Patricio of Ayala Central School SPED Center, Zamboanga City; and 鈥淎ng Etika ng Pagtuturo na Nakabatay sa Kulturang Pilipino鈥 by the Dean of the College of Arts and Letter of Bulacan State University Dr. Maria S. Bulaong.
Ms. Beverly M. Bautista, Officer-in-Charge of the UST Graduate School Center for the Conservation of Cultural Property and Environment in the Tropics, presented 鈥淢ga Guro Bilang mga Manggagawang Kultural: An Overview of Cultural Mapping.鈥
The event culminated with the launching of the Gawad PCEP sa Paggawa ng Planong Pampagkatuto na Nakabatay sa Pamanang Pangkultura, a contest that seeks to reinforce the congress outcomes through the construction of a culture-based learning plan.
