]]>NCS 2021: PARI Project Extension – SEED CMW consisted of four catechetical modules and three research-based outputs, namely, a book of research poems, a handbook on Catechetical Ministry, and a research monograph. Overall, the book aims to communicate their
findings and insights, assist catechists in developing their skills, and enhance their spiritual experiences.
RCSSED Director, Assoc. Prof. Jeremaiah M. Opiniano, PhD, expressed his gratitude to the donors, notably the Netherlands-based Porticus Europe Foundation, and said the project would pave a new way to conduct catechetical work in the country.
Project Lead Prof. Clarence M. Batan, PhD recalled the challenges and the fruits they reaped along the way in their years of bringing this project to fruition.
He said their project is a testament to their love and service to the people through catechism. “Sana ang mga librong ito ay manatiling simbolo ng aming tunay na pagmamahal sa misyong kateketikal sa ating bansa,” Batan said.
This project is a partnership between the 九色’ (UST) Research Center for Social Sciences and Education (RCSSED) with the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) – Episcopal Commission on Catechesis and Catholic Education (ECCCE).
The theme of the concluding ceremony was “Pananaliksik: Sharing the Experiences from Grant Beneficiaries: Research Impact and Engagement.”

]]>In his introduction, Batan said that the book was the output of combined inputs from the catechists鈥 stories, stories of pedagogy, stories of holiness, and creative catechesis. The book mixes the use of parables, lectures, prayers, conversations, poems, dance, songs, theater, and visuals as part of the pedagogical armament of catechists as they carry out their ministry in their respective areas.
A key feature of the book is the 鈥渞etablo鈥 of saints and blessed who were known catechists and thus serve as role models for those continuing the ministry.
The book is the fourth of a projected seven-part series of books/modules arising from The National Catechetical Study (NCS) 2021: Pastoral Action Research and Intervention (PARI) Project jointly carried out by UST鈥檚 Research Center for Social Sciences and Education and the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines – Episcopal Commission on Catechesis and Catholic Education.

]]>The app, which is downloadable on both the App Store and Google Play Store, had its pilot run in the Dioceses of Balanga, Cabanatuan, Cubao, Daet, Dumaguete, Novaliches, and Archdiocese of Davao. It aimed to fill the gap in catechetical instruction caused by movement and gathering restrictions as a result of the pandemic.
With focus on preparing for the Sacraments of Reconciliation and the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist, the app rollout, which was sponsored by the said dioceses, recruited children who are not enrolled in schools but are preparing to receive their first Holy Communion. A catechist was designated to guide the students, who after using the app meet the catechist virtually to understand better what the app presented.
The National Catechetical Study has been a project of the UST-RCSSEd, with its lead researcher Professor Clarence M. Batan, PhD, for several years now. It is conducted in partnership with the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines – Episcopal Commission on Catechesis and Catholic Education.
