Academic researchers Prof. Agnes Llamasares-Castillo, PhD, Prof. Ross D. Vasquez, PhD, Assoc. Prof. Oliver B. Villaflores, PhD, all from the Faculty of Pharmacy and the Research Center for the Natural and Applied Sciences, joined co-researchers from Singapore’s DELIGHTEX PTE LTD., namely Yutaka Kuroki, Aya Wada, Xinyi Zhu, and UST research assistants Kyle Andrei Cabatit, Jonah Joshua Garcia, and Janelan Martin.

The researchers were able to find thirty-nine plants with sleep-enhancing activities, such as Lactuca sativa, Nelumbo nucifera, and Ziziphus jujuba. The authors found that these plants “demonstrated consistent efficacy in improving sleep quality through interactions with the GABAergic system.” Though thirty-nine plants were identified in the reviewed studies, the researchers caution that “most studies are still preliminary, with the molecular mechanisms behind their sleep-enhancing effects remaining inconclusive.”

The researchers published on February 27, 2025 the review entitled “” in Phytomedicine Plus, indexed in Elsevier. The study is in line with phase 1 of the project funded by Singapore’s DELIGHTEX PTE LTD.

In an interview with the Communications Bureau, Balitaan disclosed that the Division of Chemical Sciences includes as its main thrusts empowering members “who are globally and highly respected researchers” and continuing “strong linkages with local and international scientific organizations for enhanced cooperation in the development and sharing of scientific information, responsible community leaders in ensuring environment protection, food safety and public health.”

Balitaan’s recent studies have focused “on the development of bio-inspired and biomimetic materials for anticorrosion, antibacterial, antibiofilm, wound healing and sensor applications.”

Both Balitaan and Villaflores are affiliated with the Research Center for the Natural and Applied Sciences.

The study entitled “Euglycemic and wound healing activities of Wrightia antidysenterica extracts” focused on the substance commonly known as “White angel,” whose aerial parts were dried and “sequentially extracted with solvents of increasing polarity and were subjected to in vitro assay and the most active extract was subjected to in vivo anti-hyperglycemic and wound healing tests.”

The study found that the “constituents of the active DCM bark extract revealed the presence of two unknown alkaloids and polyunsaturated fatty acids that may contribute to pharmacological claims of the extract. The results suggest that Wrightia antidysenterica DCM bark extract can be a potential source of bioactive compounds with euglycemic and wound healing properties.” The study was primarily hinged on the disease of diabetes mellitus, a chronic, multifactorial disorder with hyperglycemia as its primary biomarker.

The Gold and Silver Series awards are granted to faculty members in recognition of their research productivity and leadership in their respective fields of specialization within the period covered by the award. These awards are based on research publications (author by-line should indicate the ľĹÉ« as address in the publication), ongoing research involvement, and tenure in the University.

The Gold Series

The awards, given every two years come in two categories: Research Category and Creative Works Category. The Gold Series Award Research Category is granted to tenured full-time faculty member with Ph.D. or M.D., with teaching load, and exclusively teaching in UST except for faculty affiliates of the UST Graduate School, authored at least five research papers published in refereed journals/ scholarly books in the last five years, with at least two of these published, one of which is an international (Web of Science/ Scopus) publication, or has one patent or utility model granted, within the period covered by the award, or, authored at least two scholarly books in the last five years, with one of these published within the period covered by the award, with ongoing research under the Research Center or Research Unit of the University, and, with at least one research disciple.

The Silver Series

Under the Research Category of the Silver Series, the award is given to tenured full-time faculty member with M.Sc. or M.A., with teaching load, and exclusively teaching in UST, must have authored at least three research papers published in refereed journals/scholarly books in the last five years, with at least one of these published, or has one patent or utility model granted, within the period covered by the award or, authored at least one scholarly book in the last five years published within the period covered by the award and, with ongoing research under the Research Center or Research Unit of the University. Under the Creative Works Category, the faculty member must be tenured full-time faculty member with M.Sc. or M.A., with teaching load, and exclusively teaching in UST, must have authored at least two creative or critical works in the last five years, with at least one of these was published within the period covered by the award, and, with ongoing studies (creative projects) under the Research Center or Research Unit of the University. A Research disciple refers to junior faculty members, graduate students, medical interns, and medical residents.

The 3^rd ISMS, which coincided with the celebration of the 90^th year of foundation of the college, served as a platform for research dissemination and academic discourse, provided a venue for research collaboration, fostered international cooperation through academic and research partnership, and promoted the Sciences to young Filipinos. Notably, the importance of interdisciplinary and collaborative research was epitomized as non-Thomasians were invited to interact with the presenters and to look for possible future research collaborations. High school students were invited to promote the sciences as a possible future career option. To emphasize, Dean John Donnie A. Ramos, Ph.D., invited the participants and guests to “listen, interact, and forge collaborations with the speakers.” Nagoya City University Vice President Prof. Yuji Imaizumi, Ph.D., was guest.

Moreover, the strive for excellence by the College of Science resonated in this year’s theme, “Interdisciplinary and Collaborative Research towards Intellectualization” as stated by Office of International Relations and Program Director Prof. Lillian J. Sison, Ph.D., in her opening remarks. This symposium gave opportunity to researchers to share one’s techniques and ideas in solving scientific problems – providing an environment that allows different researchers to collaborate. Furthermore, this provided research opportunities for students to contribute in the solution of regional and global concerns. Beyond this, however, the symposium provided means to deepen relationship and appreciation of one another’s culture.

Lecturers were from the partner universities abroad, along with the researchers of the different departments of the UST College of Science. The speakers from the Chung-Yuan Christian University, Taiwan were: Prof. Danny Wen-Yaw Chung, Ph.D., Department of Electronics Engineering; Prof. Hsi-Ya Huang, Ph.D., Department of Chemistry; and Dr. Fang Sheng Tsai, M.D., Ph.D. Director, Urology Department and Vice Superintendent of Academic Affairs, Ten-Chan Hospital; Biomedical Engineering Department.

From the National Dong-Hwa University, Taiwan the speakers were: Prof. Yuan-Ron Ma, Ph.D. Head, Department of Physics and Prof. Yen-Peng Ho, Ph.D. Department of Chemistry, College of Science and Engineering.

Lecturers from partner universities in Japan were (Nagoya City University) Prof. Hidehiko Nakagawa, Ph.D., from the Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Prof. Kazunobu Sawamoto, Ph.D., of the Graduate School of Medical Sciences. From the University of Shiga Prefecture, the lecturers were Prof. Shuhei Ban, Ph.D., of the Department of Ecosystem Studies, School of Environmental Science, while from Hiroshima University, the speakers were Prof. Tsunehiro Aki, Ph.D., and Prof. Yoshiko Okamura, Ph.D., from the Department of Molecular Biotechnology, Graduate School of Advanced Sciences of Matter.
