Senior high school students and college students surveyed by Prof. Rosalyn G. Mirasol, PhD of the Research Center for Social Sciences and Education bared an altruistic motivation to pursue teaching: to shape the children’s future and to make a social contribution. But will these be enough to make them actually pursue teaching? In a study funded by the Second Congressional Commission on Education (EDCOM 2), Mirasol provided recommendations on how to complement these altruistic intentions with concrete reforms.

Presenting the initial findings of her study “Integrating Multiperspectivity in Encouraging Students to Enter the Teaching Profession: Contexts, Challenges, and Causality,” Mirasol looked into the demographic characteristics of those enrolled in the academic track – humanities and social sciences strand of senior high school and in tertiary teacher education programs to determine factors that will predict their intent to consider teaching as a career and whether they feel this is the best career option.

Combining surveys and focus group discussions, the study uncovered low interest to teach among SHS students, who expressed uncertainty about job satisfaction and economic returns. Though they considered teachers to be crucial in society, concerns about salary and workload weighed heavily on SHS students.

In contrast, education students revealed long-held childhood aspirations to teach and find it fulfilling. They agree that teachers receive support and believe that teaching provides long-term career growth.

Mirasol recommended the engagement of the community, as well as mentoring and career guidance in basic education to help promote teaching as a career. School-industry partnerships as well as incentives and support for those pursuing teaching may also be explored. Finally, the promotion of diversity and inclusion is seen as a possible way of increasing the base of future teachers.

Mirasol teaches at the Department of English and is an academic researcher of the Research Center for Social Sciences and Education. The study is funded by the Ateneo de Manila University – EDCOM II partnership and was presented on March 12, 2025.

Assoc. Prof. Rosalyn G. Mirasol, PhD of the Department of English was elected as the new president of the Reading Association of the Philippines for a term spanning the years 2022-2023 after the election held during the National Demofest held in November 24-25, 2023, at Sorsogon Provincial Stadium. The said Demofest was attended by more than 750 teachers all over the country.

The Reading Association of the Philippines, a national affiliate of the International Literacy Association (ILA) based in Delaware, Unites States of America, is a professional association of reading educators, teachers, advocates, and parents. Its mission is to improve all aspects of the national reading programs and teaching pedagogy through teacher-training, upskilling, and research. Dr. Mirasol was the country representative to the International Development in Asia Committee of ILA.

Mirasol and Dr. Marie Grace Reoperez, RAP Secretary, 2021-2022, were the lead persons in the project proposal “Kape, Basa, Pag-asa.” This project has won a grant funding from the ILA Global Committee. Mirasol is also an academic researcher at the Research Center for Social Sciences and Education.

Assoc. Prof. Rosalyn G. Mirasol, PhD and Asst. Prof. Katrina Ninfa M. Topacio, MA, faculty researchers of the Department of English, recently published a study in Reading Psychology, where they reported the disconnect between urban parents’ beliefs and practices in children’s reading development.

In the study entitled “Reading perceptions, needs, and practices among parents of an urban poor community in the Philippines,” Mirasol and Topacio surveyed 274 parents of K-1 pupils in an urban poor community in Manila, Philippines.

While the parents “believed that reading is important for their children’s social development, and that they are aware that reading starts at home. However, their needs and practices contradicted their perceptions because reading seemed to be not their priority probably due to the limited access and budget for reading materials.”

The researchers acknowledged the challenge this posed to those in-charge of education in the community, including the teachers, who share in the task of developing literacy.

Mirasol and Topacio are researchers of the UST Research Center for Social Sciences and Education.

Fourteen faculty members from different academic departments in the University have successfully completed an intensive training on translation held for ten consecutive Saturdays from 22 September to 1 December 2018 at the Lourdes J. Custodio ICD Room, Albertus Magnus Building, UST. National Artist for Literature Virgilio S. Almario, chair of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and the Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino (KWF) co-
facilitated the training, together with National Committee on Language and Translation of the NCCA Chair Dr. Michael M. Coroza.

The training was funded by the Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino. Coroza is also a professor of the Ateneo de Manila University and the UST Graduate School.

The successful fellows of the intensive training on translation were: Assoc. Prof. Jovito V. Cariño, Ph.D., and Prof. Franz Giuseppe F. Cortez, Ph.D. of the Department of Philosophy; Asst. Prof. Evalyn B. Abiog, PhD, Assoc. Prof. Rosalyn G. Mirasol, Ph.D. and Asst. Prof. Raquel R. Jimenez of the Department of English; Asst. Prof. Amur M. Asuncion, Ed.D, Asst. Prof. Elenita C. Mendoza, Mr. Alvin Ringgo C. Reyes, and Asst. Prof. Ma. Lanie V. Vergara of the Department of Filipino; Prof. Felicidad Galang-Pereña, Ed.D., and Assoc. Prof. Luciana L. Urquiola, Ph.D. of the Department of Literature and the Humanities; and Prof. Joan Christi S. Trocio-Bagaipo, Ph.D., Mr. Christopher E. Esparagoza, and Asst. Prof. Chito M. Sawit, Ph.D., of the Institute of Religion.

The intensive training on translation is a capacity-building effort of the Department of Filipino for the planned Sentro sa Salin, an office that will lead all translation undertakings in the University. According to Department of Filipino Chair Alvin Ringgo Reyes, the pool of translators of the Sentro shall come from the fellows of the training. They shall be assigned translation works within and outside the University based on their expertise to make knowledge in various fields more accessible to a wider Filipino audience, to translate indigenous knowledge for the benefit of foreign consumers, and to contribute to the intellectualization of the Filipino language.
