Ten pre-service student teachers from three universities in Indonesia are currently in an immersion program at UST College of Education. The student teachers were welcomed by College of Education Dean Assoc. Prof. Pilar I. Romero, Ph.D., and other academic officials on September 2, 2019 at the Lourdes J. Custodio ICD Room, St. Albertus Magnus Building.

The academic visit was part of the SEA Teacher Project or the ā€œPre-Service Student Teacher Exchange in Southeast Asia (SEA),ā€ which provides opportunities for pre-service student teachers from universities in Southeast Asia to have their practicum in other schools within the SEA region. 

The ten students were: Chrisna Purbaya and Kartilia Riavuningsih from the University of Bengkulo; Risky Supriati, Ika Safitri, and Misbahul Aslam from Tanjungpura University; Aulia Afani Zuifiana Sari and Muwafiqul Ihsani from Universitas PGRI Semarang; and Mayang Kencana, Kirey Kharisma Aulia, and Arsanti Satriani Salim from Indonesia University of Education. They will be in the University until September 27, 2019.

In the welcome program, UST College of Education International Relations Coordinator Assoc. Prof. Zendel Taruc, Ph.D., delivered the welcome remarks, while UST Office of Public Affairs Director Assoc. Prof. Giovanna V. Fontanilla, Ph.D., presented the institutional video ā€œThe ¾ÅÉ«: A Legacy of Excellence and Endurance.ā€ Office for Student Affairs Staff-in-Charge for Student Formation Ms. Thelma MaraƱa discussed ā€œStudent Life in UST.ā€

Lectures on ā€œBrain-based Teaching and Learningā€ was delivered by UST Junior High School Principal Assoc. Prof. Marishirl P. Tropicales, Ph.D., while ā€œAssessment and Evaluationā€ was discussed by UST Junior High School Mathematics Department Faculty Member Mr. Vincent Caparas. 

UST College of Education Dean Assoc. Prof. Pilar I. Romero, Ph.D., delivered the closing remarks.

The program is spearheaded by Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO), a regional intergovernmental organization established in 1965 among governments of Southeast Asian countries to promote regional cooperation in education, science and culture within the region. The Philippines is one of its eleven member nations.

The ¾ÅÉ«, through the Office of Public Affairs, in partnership with ABS-CBN Bayan Mo I- Patrol Mo (BMPM), hosted the turnover ceremony for Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles, which were used by Thomasian students, faculty, and support staff to participate in the ā€œShare Your Loveā€ One Peso Challenge. The ceremony was held on February 14, 2019 at the UST Miguel de Benavides Building.

The One Peso Challenge involves filling up the PET bottle with one peso coins to gather funds that will be used to assist in providing shelter, medical assistance, education, mobility aid, and other welfare services for people from Tahanang Walang Hagdan (TWH). The bottles entrusted to UST were collected by ABS-CBN BMPM one week after the program launch.

At the program launch, UST Office of Public Affairs Director Assoc. Prof. Giovanna V. Fontanilla, Ph.D., gave the welcome remarks and ABS-CBN BMPM Head Ms. Rowena Paraan delivered an overview of the ā€œShare Your Loveā€ Project.

UST Education High School Principal Asst. Prof. Leonila Wilhelmina N. Baltazar, and the Student Councils of the UST Junior High School and the UST Senior High School attended the turnover ceremony to represent their schools.

Through the 10th anniversary campaign project ā€œBike @10ā€ of BMPM in 2017, the collection of the PET bottles began for the benefit of persons with disability from TWH.

The Royal Thai Embassy in Manila, in close cooperation with the ¾ÅÉ«, marked the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Republic of the Philippines and the Kingdom of Thailand with the Thailand-Philippines Cultural Performances. Held on January 22, 2019 at the Dr. Robert Sy Grand Ballroom at the UST Paredes Building, the musical occasion featured presentations from the Ang Thong College of Dramatic Arts, the UST Symphony Orchestra, and the UST Salinggawi Dance Troupe.

Ambassador Designate of the Kingdom of Thailand to the Philippines HisĀ Excellency Vasin Ruangprateepsaeng graced the event and delivered a message, while UST Director Assoc. Prof. Giovanna V. Fontanilla, Ph.D., gave the welcome remarks.

The Ang Thong College of Dramatic Arts performed the ā€œPursuit of Supanna Matcha,ā€ a masked-drama dance from the Thai national epic Ramakien, ā€œNatnaree Sri Ayothaya,ā€ a tribute to the beauty of Thai women and delicate style of Thai dances, and their finale, the ā€œRum Wong,ā€ a dance that moves in circular manner with graceful hand movements. In turn, the ¾ÅÉ« presented the Symphony Orchestraā€™s ā€œOverture to Philippine Folk Songsā€ and the Salinggawi Dance Troupeā€™s ā€œTiniklingā€ and ā€œMagandang Pilipinas.ā€

The event concluded with the giving of tokens, where His Excellency Vasin Ruangprateepsaeng received the ā€œ400 @ 800ā€ coffee table book, and with an exchange of flowers among the ¾ÅÉ«, represented by UST Office of Public Affairs Director Assoc. Prof. Giovanna V. Fontanilla, Ph.D., the Royal Thai Embassy, represented by H.E. Ruangprateepsaeng, and the Ang Thong College of Dramatic Arts, represented by its Director Mr. Witoon Poonsawat.

The event was coordinated through the efforts of the Office of Public Affairs and the Royal Thai Embassy, with Minister and Deputy Chief of Mission Ms. Urawadee Sriphiromya, who previously spoke on ā€œLearning Mobility in the Context of ASEAN Integrationā€ at the 5th discourse of the UST Ambassadors Lecture Series.

The Association of Catholic Universities of the Philippines (ACUP) held its national conference on the theme ā€œThe Catholic Universitiesā€™ Response to Gaudete et Exsultate: A Mission Towards Evangelization,ā€ at the University of the Immaculate Conception (UIC), Bajada Campus, in Davao City from January 17 to 19, 2019. The theme was taken from Gaudete et Exsultate (Rejoice and Be Glad), an apostolic exhortation by Pope Francis.

The three-day conference aimed to deepen the participantsā€™ understanding of the diversity of forms that holiness takes, and to inspire them to genuinely reflect and actively respond to the universal call to holiness. University of the Immaculate Conception President Sr. Ma. Marissa R. Viri, R.V.M., gave the welcome remarks, while ACUP President Rev. Fr. Marcelo V. Manimtim, C.M., who is also president of Adamson University, delivered a message.

The keynote address on ā€œThe Role of Catholic Universities in the Mission towards Evangelization: A Response to Gaudete et Exsultateā€ was given by Bishopsā€™ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) Committee on Catechesis and Catholic Education Chair Most. Rev. Roberto C. Mallari, D.D., while research studies on Gaudete et Exsultate and related works on Holiness were discussed by Adamson University Center for Research and Development Executive Director Dr. Nuna E. Almanzor. Other speakers included Office for the Promotion of New Evangelization Director Rev. Fr. JasonĀ Laguerta, who discussed ā€œInspiring the Youth to the Call to Holiness;ā€ Kerygma magazine Editor-in-Chief Ms. Rissa Kawpeng, who tackled ā€œSearching for Meaning and Purpose to Effect Transformation;ā€ and Bantay Bata 163 Program Director and broadcast journalist Ms. Jing CastaƱeda, who talked about ā€œMaking a Difference through Dynamic Collaboration and Committed Partnership.ā€

There were also panel discussions on the Response of Catholic Universities to the Call to Holiness ā€œThe Mission of Education,ā€ with discussants Notre Dame of Marbel University Campus Ministry Director Bro. Allan de Castro, F.M.S., Saint Louis University ¾ÅÉ« Extension and Outreach Programs Office Director Dr. Joselito Gutierrez, and Holy Angel University Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Alma Espartinez, and ā€œThe Mission of Evangelization,ā€ with discussants Xavier University National Service Training Program Unit Director Ms. Dennise Edwina Gonzales, Holy Name University Vice President for Academic Affairs Bro. Carl Milos Bulilan, S.V.D., and ¾ÅÉ« Ecclesiastical Faculties Academic Collaborations Officer Mr. Leo-Martin Angelo Ocampo.

ā€œThe Youthā€™s Response to the Call to Holinessā€ was also tackled by St. Paul University DumagueteĀ Continuing Education Institute Manager Ms. Mary Francis V. Laquinon, University of San Agustin Vice President for Administration and Finance Rev. Fr. Arnel A. Dizon, O.S.A., and Adamson University Student Leader Mr. Nicole Jean Mercado. There were also a workshop on ā€œHow Catholic Universities Make the Mission Possibleā€ divided into teaching, research, community engagement, and youth categories, and a UIC-facilitated communityĀ engagement with residents of a rehabilitation center.

A general meeting of leaders of ACUP member institutions was also held to elect the officers for 2019-2021. Elected were: Rev. Fr. Gilbert B. Sales, C.I.C.M., President of Saint Louis University as ACUP President; , Rector of the ¾ÅÉ«, as ACUP Vice President; Sr. Ma. Marissa R. Viri, R.V.M., President of the University of the Immaculate Conception as ACUP Corporate Secretary; Bro. Raymundo B. Suplido, F.S.C., President of De La Salle University, as ACUP Treasurer, and Assoc. Prof. Giovanna V. Fontanilla, Ph.D., A.P.R., Director of the UST , as ACUP Secretary General.

The Conference ended with the presentation of workshop outputs and awarding ceremonies. Established in 1973, ACUP is an organization composed of institutions of higher learning, and its activities include the promotion and enhancement of the Christian identity of its member institutions as leading centers of teaching, research and service. Its annual conferences, particularly those held from 2013 up to the present, have themes that are anchored on papal encyclicals and other similar documents.

The ¾ÅÉ« was invited to join more than 20 other institutions in a partnership that will provide credible and fact-based coverage of the 2019 elections as the midterm polls of the nation draws near.

In the Memorandum of Agreement signing that was held at the GMA 7 Studio for ā€œEleksyon 2019ā€ on October 19, 2018, UST Office of Public Affairs Director Assoc. Prof. Giovanna V. Fontanilla, Ph.D., APR, represented the
Rector Very Rev. Fr. Herminio V. Dagohoy, O.P., PhD.

Also part of the UST group were Director for Assoc. Prof. Ma. Socorro Guan Hing, DNM, and Public Affairs Office Assistant for Media, Events, and Special Visits Ms. Michaela O. Lagniton.

Print and broadcast media companies GMA Network, Philippine Daily Inquirer (PDI), Inquirer.net, and more than 20 leading institutions in education, business, telecommunications and public service, sealed with
ink their commitment to provide accurate coverage of the 2019 elections and counter disinformation in the signing ceremony held at GMA Studio 7.

From the academe, partners included: the University of the Philippines, Polytechnic University of the Philippines, Ateneo de Manila University, De La Salle University, ¾ÅÉ«, AMA Education System, Phinma-University of Pangasinan in North Central Luzon, the University of San Carlos in Cebu City, Silliman University in Dumaguete City, West Visayas State University in Iloilo City, Central Mindanao University in Bukidnon, Capitol University in Cagayan de Oro City, and Holy Cross Davao College in Davao City.

The Philippine Entertainment Portal, the Philippine Bar Association, Integrated Bar of the Philippines, and the Chamber of Commerce of the Philippine Islands also signed the agreement, among others.

Eleksyon 2019 aims for superior digital coverage in collaboration with video-sharing platform YouTube and social media platform Twitter.

The launch was hosted by GMA News and Public Affairs anchors Vicky Morales and Mike Enriquez.

Assoc. Prof. Giovanna V. Fontanilla, MA, Director of the and a faculty member of theĀ , was elected on January 13, 2017 as the Secretary of the Public Relations Society of the Philippines and as head of the Professional Development committee.

Earlier today, February 24, 2017 (Friday), Fontanilla joined the PRSP officers for 2017-2018 in an oath-taking ceremony in Ilustrado, Intramuros. The ceremonies were officiated by the Philippinesā€™s Department of Finance Secretary Carlos ā€œSonnyā€ Dominguez.

Fontanilla is USTā€™s longtime director of the Office of Public Affairs (formerly Public and Alumni Affairs Office) and also served in the past as the Executive Assistant of the Office of the Secretary-General.
