The Department of Food Technology and the Philippine Association of Food Technologists – Epsilon Chapter held the webinar entitled “Thomasian Food Technologists in the Global Arena” on November 25, 2020, Wednesday, featuring Thomasian food technology alumni who are abroad sharing experience in the food industry and overseas.

The first speaker, Ms. Ann Carillo of Kerry Foods Malaysia, noted that food technology was not a choice when she was in college. She ended up taking it to study in the 九色 than in the University of the Philippines Diliman as a journalist. She mentioned that rejection is not always a bad thing and that it may lead to new opportunities, as long as one is taking and looking.

The second speaker, Mr. Gerardo Carrera of Browns Restaurant Group Canada, highlighted that transferring to another country is indeed tiring but
fulfilling; in such a way that aspects such as living conditions, career opportunities, are increased given that one has a positive attitude when working.

Lastly, Ms. Brenda Singco-Galido, PhD of Bureau Veritas Assure Quality Australlia said that food technology eventually became her choice as the time passed by. She noted that her love for chemistry and her family was her driving force in living overseas and while she was studying.

Thereafter, Assoc. Prof. Elizabeth Hashim-Arenas of the Department of Food Technology awarded the certificates of appreciation to the guest speakers who have made their time available despite their busy schedules and different time zones. Also, the department of food technology thanked the speakers for lending their time and their generosity for participating in the event.

On November 5, 2020, Prof. Roderick Salenga, Technical Officer for Port Moresby of the World Health Organization 鈥 Papua New Guinea, delivered a webinar for students of the , as part of UST鈥檚 Enriched Virtual Mode of instruction and internationalization efforts.

Salenga鈥檚 lecture, entitled 鈥淔it for Purpose: Putting Competencies into Practice,鈥 aimed at developing the students鈥 personal and interpersonal skills. In the lecture, Salinga emphasized on soft skills that the PharmD students must embrace in their practice 鈥渟ince the workplace requires more of social and emotional skills.鈥 Technical knowledge, intellect, cognitive ability, Salenga emphasized, are only part of the requirements for being effective in the workplace. Being passionate, adaptable, consistent and having the ability to manage relationships and to communicate with others are important intrapersonal and interpersonal skills to be developed.

A total of twenty-nine PharmD students learned from Salenga, whose lecture was joined by Faculty of Pharmacy officials and faculty members. The two-year post-baccalaureate degree Doctor of Pharmacy is offered by the , which has infused the program with internationalization activities, both in the lecture and practice dimensions. Salenga joins the international speakers of the program, which also saw speakers from the University of Illinois in Chicago deliver instruction to students.
